How much money
Derived: $2,000. The two terms arrive at the same number, by different roads.

Options are the one door where the guru answer ($2,000–$5,000) and the computed answer roughly agree — but the gurus never show why, and the why matters, because it tells you which options trades are even available to a small account.
Computed minimum viable capital for options: $2,000 (risk term $2,000 · cost term $2,000 · about $40 a month of costs at beginner frequency). Survival floor: $500. One contract controls 100 shares; a cheap contract bought for about $50 of premium, with a planned exit at a 40% loss, risks $20 a trade. Risking 1% at a time therefore takes $2,000. The cost side independently arrives at $2,000: about $5 a round trip (roughly $1.30 of commissions plus the spread crossed on small contracts), eight trades a month, $40 a month of costs.
A $0.50 option quoted with a $0.05 spread charges you about $5 — 10% of the premium — the moment you enter one contract. The contracts a $200 account can afford are precisely the illiquid ones with spreads like that, or wider. This is the cost nobody puts in the course brochure, and it is why the options minimum is set by mechanics rather than by what a broker will accept ($0, like everywhere).
A stock can be wrong for a month and recover; a bought option is wrong on a schedule. Time decay means the beginner's position loses value for standing still, which converts 'small, defined risk' into a recurring, dated expense. Your journal should record, for each of your first 50 demo trades, the premium, the spread you crossed, and the days to expiry — the three numbers that decide whether your options minimum is the site's or a higher personal one.
