Prop-firm challenge vs your own account: the expected-cost verdict

The $99 ticket against the savings account, with the published pass and payout rates done honestly.

Facts checked on October 22, 2026

The challenge pitch writes itself: why save for years when $99 rents you a $10,000 account? The arithmetic writes a different paragraph.

The challenge door, computed

Cheapest serious ticket in the dated dataset: FTMO (US, via OANDA) 2-Step, $10,000 account, list price at $99. FPFX Technology dataset, 300,000+ prop-firm accounts, reported by Finance Magnates (2024): about 14% of buyers reach the funded stage, and about 45% of those ever receive a payout — about 7 buyers in 100 are ever paid. So the expected fees to reach the funded stage are about $707, and the expected fees per buyer who ever receives a first payout are about $1,571. The average payout is about 4% of account size — roughly $3,200 to the trader on a $100,000 account after the split. On a $10,000 account, the average payout is about $320 — against expected fees, per ever-paid buyer, of $1,571.

The own-money door, computed

Saving the same $1,571 instead buys a small own-money account above the computed minimum for the gentlest leveraged door on this site (forex, minimum viable capital $1,000), where there is no consistency rule, no news blackout, no payout review, and 100% of a smaller profit is yours. It is also slower, smaller, and entirely possible to lose — the regulator's loss figure applies there too.

The verdict

Neither door wins in general; the order does. Demo under the challenge's exact rules first (free, 20 sessions, journal). If the record passes, and your capital covers the expected cost of the series — not one ticket — the challenge is a priced option, not a scam and not a shortcut. If either condition fails, the own-money door, started at or above its computed minimum, is the cheaper education. What never wins: the first ticket bought with money that cannot afford the seventh.
